What was your routine while preparing for the exam ?
See , I had two different type of schedule , one before joining BSNL and other one is after joining.
Before joining BSNL , I had complete day to myself for studying and utilized it completely because i preferred sleeping in night. As my only focus was on UPSC-ESE which has very vast syllabus including General Studies , Aptitude and Technical Subjects , so i devoted around 8-10 hours on average per day. I used to study in Municipality Library from 8 Am to 8 Pm . In these 12 hours useful output was between 8 to 10 hours at max.
After joining BSNL , it was really tough to manage those study hours . So , I used to study around 2 hours early morning before going to office. I used to scan my notes in an App called ‘Cam scanner’ and used to study while travelling in metro which is about 45 mins each side. Then 2 hours during lunch and Tea breaks in office . I used to leave home around 10 AM and reach back around 6.30. I used to sleep for 1-2 hours after coming home and then study for around 3-4 hours before sleeping. In total my useful output in working days was around 6-7 hours at max.
How much time did you take to cover your syllabus?
I only studied for UPSC ESE Electronics and Telecommunication and gave GATE as a part of preparation. For the very first time , I felt i took almost an year to complete major syllabus and then in further attempts i used to cover the leftover and improve more on my concepts for conventional questions and speed with accuracy for Objective Questions.
In case of GATE , I solved previous year questions completely for Instrumentation and ECE branch. I also solved selectively from Electrical Engineering Previous Year Gate questions.
Books you followed during preparation?
I followed class notes from Made Easy which helped me alot to build my basics. For practice i solved Previous Year GATE questions of Instrumentation , ECE and Electrical Engineering (selectively) , Previous Year Objective for Engineering Service (ECE) and Previous year conventional for Engineering Services (ECE) . I also referred to NPTEL lectures whenever i had difficulty in concepts.
Few words For Juniors?
I feel the most important thing in preparation of GATE or UPSC – ESE is self belief . Just take small steps towards your goal and enjoy the journey. For sure you need to have patience , but in the end if you have done sincere hard work you will definitely succeed.
Always remember whenever we do something with full dedication , then ” Ya toh hum jeet jaate hai , ya kuch seekh jaate hai”
GATE and IES are not the end of this world but if you take decision to prepare for it , then go for it and never look back.
All the best , enjoy your subjects , fall in love with them and they will love you back with much more intensity and reward you success in return.
