As GATE 2017 result is out and students who qualified these exams but not get good rank by any reason and the students who are preparing first time for the above exams wants to know how should we prepare so that we may also get good rank in GATE IES and PSUs exam.
Today we are with Shivam Singh who secured AIR 01 in GATE 2017 in Electrical engineering branch.
Shivam Singh completed his B.Tech from NIT, Raipur in electrical engineering.
Shivam Singh first of all congratulation for securing all India rank 01 in GATE 2017.
Kindly tell us about yourself. From where did you done your engineering and from which branch?
I did B.Tech in Electricak engineering. I was the student of NIT, Raipur. I secure All India Rank 01 in GATE 2017 in electrical branch this year, last year i.e in GATE 2016 i gave my first attempt and get AIR 698.
You are from Electrical Engineering. How much did you score in GATE 2017?
My all India rank in gate 2017 is 01, My score in GATE 2017 is 81.25/100 and after normalization my score was 1000/1000.
Kindly tell us how long you take to cover all the syllabus of Electrical Engineering GATE 2017.
When I was in my 4th semester I started to prepare for GATE exam, i was an average student and my pointer was not excellent so I decided to fully focus on studies. This was my second attempt, last year i.e in GATE 2016 I achieved AIR 698, i was not happy with my rank so decided to give next attempt this year.
I don’t know how much time will it take t o cover all syllabus if aspirant is doing job or dropping for GATE exam preparation; but with college this preparation will take time as you have to prepare for your academics as well as have to manage time for GATE and other competition exam study.
Because you are a topper this year so everyone wants to know how much time you devote for this exam?
I want to share my experience with readers so they may know how to save your year and get good rank in first attempt.
When I was giving my first attempt I was preparing with my college, during my semester exams I was only focusing on academics and my GATE preparation was affecting. I don’t get enough time to cover my full syllabus and to give mock tests. Still i secured AIR 698 that year. But i know my potential so decided to give my next attempt. I was also placed in a L&T company with 5.5 Lakh annual package, but GATE and IES was my aim.
When I gave my first attempt, that year I only revised full syllabus one time and also this year also I was able to only make one revision after full preperation. So you may not say how much time is required. “Quality is more important than quantity” .
Share your strategies with you junior who are reading this interview, like what is the ideal time to prepare for this exam and schedule.
Start your preparation as early as possible and manage your time. I started my preparation in final year but was not able to secure AIR 01 in my first attempt so you don’t make this mistake. Start preparing early from notes and books.
Share some valuable points one should know if preparing for GATE exam.
Make your main notes, give test series and analyse your mistakes in test series. After this only you may know your weak areas, again revise and make short notes from your mistakes.
How to cope with stress during GATE preparation and during GATE exam ?
Well don’t think about anything, don’t act like how I should be or how should I prepare and all other questions, be normal and read daily.
And during GATE exam when you are giving test try to start from easy topics like aptitude to gain confidence. Also before one month from GATE 2017, I downloaded my admit card and in that my exam timing was 2-5 P.M so before 01 month I started to give full mock test in this time slot only. By this my mind was calm on the deciding day.
Any advice for future aspirants?
My father is a Civil Engineer by profession and he always motivated me during my studies to do well and rank better in GATE for a better future. It helped me keep my focus solely on my studies without looking for other options while preparing.
There might be times when you will feel frustrated and lag at your preparation. This is the time you should not feel distracted by the success of your friends. You should only focus on your studies and only on studies.
